Bullseye Club at John L Colbert Middle School Rewards and Motivates English Language Learners With Sneakers

Students in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at John L Colbert Middle School who have met the state requirements will visit Rock City Kicks at 121 W. Township in Fayetteville on Tuesday, September 19 at 12:15 p.m. to choose a pair of shoes at no cost to the student or to the school.

ESL students are required to take an annual English language test that measures each student’s ability to meet state requirements in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Each John L Colbert Middle School student who meets the “target” of 3 of 4 of these requirements will become members of “The Bullseye Club.”

The Bullseye Club was created by Dr. Mary Collins, an ESL teacher at John L Colbert Middle School, to motivate and reward her students for meeting or exceeding English language proficiency goals.

Members of the Bullseye Club will also be given a t-shirt bearing each student's name (donated by Houndstooth Press).

Rock City Kicks offered a generous discount to make the project possible, and Dr. Collins solicited the help of other local businesses to help fund the project (Bolt and Screw Supply Inc., Adventure Subaru, and RGC Glass).

2022 was the first year for the Bullseye Club project.  The reception and excitement that the club generated prompted Dr. Collins to continue the project this year. The example the program has set helps students to set goals and achieve success.  The hope is that
displaying samples of real work and progress from years past can model the success that students hope to emulate.
